Subject: [bangla-vision] THE MARTYRDOM (SHAHADATH) OF TIPPU SULTAN
THE MARTYRDOM (SHAHADATH) OF TIPPU SULTAN
by
S.M.PASHA
On the 4th of May 1799 C.E. at about 4 p.m. fell, the one and only Indian prince who opposed the ambitious and unscrupulous Britishers so courageously that for a very long time after the conquest of Mysore, English mummies would put their kids t0 sleep saying: "Go to sleep or else Tippu Sultan will come and carry you away." That he was the most dreaded and formidable foe of the English is borne out from the fact that the British troops led by Wellesley, whilst storming Srirangapattinam, on hearing the news of the martyrdom of Tippu Sultan, cried in joy : " INDIA IS OURS". He laid down his life defending his Motherland, preferring death to dishonour and true to his maxim that :to live like a lion for just one day is far more honourable that living for a hundred years like a fox."
This noble and gallant Mujahhidh was born at Devanahalli in the Kilar District on the 10th of November 1750. Whilst his illustrious father Hyder Ali was unlettered, Tippu was well-versed in learning. It is said that he could read and write English and French too. Tippu inherited a powerful empire extending from the Krishna in the north, Dindigul in the south, from the Malabar in the west to the Eastern ghats in the east. The extent of his empire was a sort of a curse in disguise inasmuch as it exited the jealousy of his enemies- the Marathas, the Nizam and the Britishers.
Shaheed Tippu Sultan's rule over Mysore was very short but it was very stormy and eventful. It was he and none else who converted an insignificant princely State in the remote corner of the land into one of the most well-developed and prosperous kingdom in India.
It is falsely alleged that this noble Muslim prince was an anti- Hindus and anti -Hinduism fanatic. Nothing is farther from truth than this malicious and mischievous allegation. He held Hindu sadhus in high esteem as evidenced from his correspondence in writing with the Shankaracharya of the Singeri Mutt; his grants to Hindu temples. It was Tippu Sultan who was the first to bestow on the Shankaracharya the lofty title "JAGATHGURU". Besides, the Singeri Mutt. the beneficiaries of Tippu Sultan's generosity were the Lakshmikantha temple at Kalele in Nanjandudh taluk; the Narayaswami temple in Melkote and the Ranganatha temple in Srirangapatinam. Unlike other Muslim kings, who gave Muslim names to their capitals, Tippu retained the name of the capital SRIRANGAPATTINAM instead of calling it TIPPUABAD,. The Gopur temple in Kanjeepuram in Tamilnadu owes its existence only because of his timely assistance.
Yes. He did take severe action against his Hindu subjects but took such action only when they betrayed him and his kingdom by allying with the enemies of India. He did not spare his fellow-religionists - the Nawabs of Kurnool and Sawannur when they were found guilty of such an unpardonable crime. It is said and what is said is believed to be true that PURNIYYA, his Brahmin Minister betrayed him. Wallahu alam bis sawab.,{ Allah knows best.}. But it is clear as daylight that it was Tippu Sultan's Muslim Minister MIR SADIQH who betrayed him by withdrawing , as per a pre-arranged plan, the troops under him, on the pretext of disbursement of salaries. The wretched Governor of GURRAMKUNDAH Qamaruddi Khan who was made a Nawab of that place by the Britishers immediately after the conquest of Srirangapatinam was a much more disgraceful betrayer.
May Tippu Sultan's noble soul rest in eternal peace in the Jannathul Firdouse and may our Ummah produce many more such MUJAHIDHS like Shaheedh Tippu Sultan Rahnathullah alaih.
Respectfully submitted to the "MILLI GAZETTE" for favour of publication in the MAY 1st to 15th Issue.
