Though a range of state services face cuts from this year's Legislature, the governor invoked his emergency powers to order the state Agency for Persons with Disabilities to immediately roll back payments to group homes and social workers by 15 percent -- an amount providers say could put them out of business and threaten their clients' safety. Aides help them eat, bathe, take medication and otherwise care for themselves.

Drug tests for the needy (Herald-Tribune) 05 Apr 2011 It goes without saying that welfare applicants should spend what little money they have on food and shelter — not intoxicants. But it's punitive and counterproductive to deny needy people subsistence aid, for a year or more, if they fail a drug test. Gov. Rick Scott (T) -- who has a big financial interest in Solantic, a chain of clinics whose services include drug screening -- favors the idea. Some legislators like it, too, and have proposed bills moving forward in the Legislature. As drafted, however, these measures are misguided. They should either be revised or scrapped.

Honeybees 'entomb' hives to protect against pesticides, say scientists 06 Apr 2011 Honeybees are taking emergency measures to protect their hives from pesticides, in an extraordinary example of the natural world adapting swiftly to our depredations, according to a prominent bee expert. Scientists have found numerous examples of a new phenomenon - bees "entombing" or sealing up hive cells full of pollen to put them out of use, and protect the rest of the hive from their contents. The pollen stored in the sealed-up cells has been found to contain dramatically higher levels of pesticides and other potentially harmful chemicals than the pollen stored in neighbouring cells, which is used to feed growing young bees.
