  • Protesters have promising dialogue with Maharashtra Chief Minister yesterday and Chief Secretary today, dialogues to continue

  • Resolve to intensify action from May 2nd onwards if sufficient progress is not made till then

Mumbai, Apil 6 : Today afternoon a delegation consisting of representatives of slum dwellers, dam affected and other development displaced sections, met Shri Ratnakar Gaikwad, Chief Secretary. Responding positively to the issues and demands of the delegation, he assured speedy action on the issues of rehabilitation of Sardar Sarovar and Tata Dam affected people, Lavasa irregularities, and housing for the slum dwellers of Mumbai. Yesterday a delegation along with Medha patkar also met the Chief Minister, Prithvi Raj Chauhan and discussed various issues. There was a considerate hearing given by the Chief minister but no concrete action was taken citing various reasons, such as ongoing assembly and others.

The major outcomes of the meeting in two days are as under :

  1. Joint meeting involving representatives of Narmada Bachao Andolan to be held by the Collector in Nandurbar to resolve the various pending issues with respect to SSP dam.

  2. Mumbai to be included in the list of cities where Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojana will be implemented.

  3. State Authorities to look in to the issues of dam affected people from Tata and Van Marathwada

  4. Strict action to be taken against Lavasa Corporation for violating the rules and regulations in the construction of Lavasa city.

  5. While welcoming the decision Sharad Pawar has recused himself from the Group of Ministers on Lokpal Bill, demonstrators hoped that a joint committee will look in to the Lokpal Bill as demanded by people across the country.

Earlier nearly 10,000 people including slum dwellers from Mumbai, dam affected people from Nandurbar, Pune and other regions, and those displaced by the proposed Airport and SEZs in different parts of the State walked from August Kranti Maidan to Azad Maidan demanding rights as accrued to them under various schemes and also abolition of projects displacing and affecting adversely people's livelihood.

They also pledged support to the indefinite fast undertaken by Anna Hazare in Delhi and demanded strict action against corruption. They pointed that it will not be sufficient only to take action against those who have amassed wealth through corruption but also stop ecological corruption, where natural resources such as land, water, forests, minerals and all are being sold out to the Corporations at pittance without considering the inter generational equity and causing massive losses of livelihood to people and unequal growth in society.

Yesterday they had a meeting with Chief Minister but they decided to continue the dharna since Mr. Chavan remained non-committal on various issues. Today they had a further dialogue with the Chief Secretary who assured speedy action on various demands of the protesters. It has been decided that few more days will be given and if nothing comes out on this then from May 2nd the intensified agitation across the state will be launched.
