A senior IPS officer posted as Additional Director General (Housing) in Mumbai, Ranjit Kumar Sahay, allegedly attempted suicide at his Malabar Hill residence by immolating himself late Saturday night. Doctors at Bombay Hospital, where he was admitted, said Sahay sustained 55 per cent burns and was in a critical state.

Although the reason was not immediately clear, as it is under police investigation, it has emerged that Sahay had recently complained of harassment at workplace and leveled serious allegations against his immediate superior, DG (Housing) Praveen Dixit, accusing him of favouring a private player for police housing projects.

Sahay had written three or four letters to Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Amitabh Rajan and Chief Secretary Jayant Kumar Banthia on irregularities in the Maharashtra State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation.

A 1986 batch officer, Sahay earlier served as Chief Vigilance Officer in the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation. During this stint, he had sent a report to the state Anti Corruption Bureau, alleging kickbacks in contracts for bus tyre retreading. Later, the ACB sought government sanction for an inquiry against then MSRTC MD Deepak Kapoor, a high-profile 1991 batch IAS officer who was formerly private secretary to Praful Patel.

When contacted, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Rajan said, "I studied the papers and after applying my mind, I recommended to the government that the ACB be given permission."

Rajan said he also received Sahay's letters on allegations pertaining to the police housing corporation. Soon after his transfer to the corporation in August, Sahay alleged Dixit was favouring B G Shirke Construction Technology Pvt. Ltd while awarding contracts.
