Privatization of water services in New Delhi: Myth and reality

Seven years after its previous attempt to privatize water infrastructure in Delhi, that was foiled by stiff opposition from its citizens, the Delhi government is yet again going ahead with its privatization plans. This may only make the situation worse, since the private sector may be anxious about profits and may not be accountable to Delhi's residents. Those who cannot pay for life-giving water may lose their water connections, and water may become a profitable business for a few and unaffordable to many.

Citizens groups in Delhi are building up a campaign for an immediate withdrawal of the recent moves towards water privatization imposed by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), and to ensure that the Delhi government retains the responsibility of providing adequate and assured water of good quality, to its citizens.

Can water, being a basis of life, be equated with any other commodity or service ? Is privatisation the answer to our water woes ?
