Musafir D. Baitha मिथकों की विवेचना करें तो महिषासुर हमारे लोकनायकों में से ठहराते हैं, वंचित वर्गों से रहे हैं जिन्होंने अपने समय की बेजा वर्चस्व एवं प्रभु वर्गों के एक सिम्बौल दुर्गा से लोहा लिया था, जिसे छल-बल से मारा गया. मिथकों में शम्बूक और एकलव्य ऐसे ही लोकनायकवीर सपूत साबित होते हैं जिन्होंने अभिवंचितों को नयी राह दिखाने की कोशिश की, अपना मानवीय अधिकार पाने के लिए खुद रास्ता तैयार किया, अपने श्रम एवं प्रतिभा की दुदुम्भी अभावों में पलकर भी बजवाई.


आइये, लोककथाओं, मिथकों, काल्पनिक कथाओं से हम अपने काम की चीज़ चुनें, अन्धविश्वास एवं दैवीय चमत्कार आदि थोथे तत्वों को उड़ाकर सार को गहें और जनसामान्य को चेतन बनाएँ, व्यर्थ के देवी-देवता एवं प्रतीक जो हमारे मन-मस्तिष्क पर सांस्कारिक कब्ज़ा जमाये हुए हैं, उन्हें बेदर्दी से उतार फेंके.


जाहिर है, प्रचलित देवी-देवताओं से शक्ति न लेकर उनको आगे किये जाने की सनातन ब्राह्मणी-सवर्णी वर्चस्व की राजनीति को हमें समझने की जरूरत है. दिन-प्रति-दिन की अनिवार दुर्घटनाएं, घटनाएँ बता रही हैं कि इन अलौकिक देवी-देवताओं से हमारा कोई भला नहीं होने वाला. भला हमारे अपने ज्ञान-विज्ञान, मानवीय व्यवहार, एक दूसरे के दुःख-सुख से संलग्नता को अपनाने से होगा.


एक आधुनिक लोकतान्त्रिक मनुष्य को अधिकार व कर्तव्य चेतन होना चाहिए, महज मानवीय शक्ति एवं श्रम पर भरोसा करना चाहिए.

বিজয়ার শুভেছা পাচ্ছি, ফেসবুকে, SMS-এ। একজন নাস্তিক এবং অধার্মিকের কাছে এ এক বিড়ম্বনা! শুধু নাম দেখে একজনের ধর্ম-পরিচয় ঠিক করে ফেলা এখানকার এক সাধারণ কালচার! যাগগে, সেটা অন্য বিতর্ক। ২-১টি প্রশ্ন আছে আপনাদের, যারা বিজয়া (এবং দূর্গাপূজা) নিয়ে ব্যাতিব্যাস্ত হয়ে উঠেছেন।
১) বিজয়ার সঙ্গে একটা জয়-পরাজয়ের গন্ধ জড়িয়ে আছে। এখানে কার জয়, আর কারই বা পরাজয়? দশমীতে 'দূর্গা মা'কে ভাসিয়ে দিয়ে ভক্তদের তো দুখের সাগরেই ডুব দেওয়ার কথা। কিন্তু কিসের আনন্দে কোলাকুলি, মিষ্টিমুখ চলে ঘরে ঘরে? কিসের জয়? কাকে জয়?
২) দূর্গার পায়ের নিচে যে অসুর বধ হয়, সে অসুর কারা? অসুর তো অশুভ। কিন্তু ওদের চেহারার সাথে কাদের মিল আছে বলে মনে হয়? মাথায় কোকড়ানো চুল, কুচকুচে কালো, শক্ত পেশি... ওরা কি প্রাচীন বাংলার প্রতিনিধী?
৩) বাংলায় দূর্গাপূজার ইতিহাস মাত্র কয়েকশ বছরের পূরোনো। তাহলে কি এটা বহিরাগত (মানে, ঔপনিবেশিক) সংস্কৃতি?

প্রতিমা বিসর্জনকে কেন্দ্র করে উত্তেজনা ছড়াল সল্টলেক এফ ডি ব্লকে।  কাউকে না জানিয়ে মণ্ডপ থেকে প্রতিমা বের করে তা জল দিয়ে গলিয়ে দেওয়ার অভিযোগ তুললেন স্থানীয় বাসিন্দারা।

অভিযোগ, সোমবার দুপুর দেড়টা নাগাদ মণ্ডপ থেকে প্রতিমা বের করে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়। এরপর ইন্দিরা ভবনের পাশে একটি ফাঁকা জায়গায় দমকলের মাধ্যমে জল গিয়ে প্রতিমা গলিয়ে দেওয়া হয় বলে অভিযোগ। খবর জানাজানি হতেই বিক্ষোভে ফেটে পড়েন স্থানীয় বাসিন্দারা। ব্লকের পুজো কমিটির সভাপতি প্রদীপ সেনগুপ্তর বিরুদ্ধে অভিযোগ স্থানীয় বাসিন্দাদের। পরে বিধাননগর দক্ষিণ থানার পুলিস ঘটনাস্থলে গিয়ে পরিস্থিতি নিয়ন্ত্রণে আনে।

Looks like a few misinformed and misguided individuals are trying again to show seed of discord among we Nepalese and saying Mata Durga is bad, Mahishashur is good. Pretty amazing. Must call guys in long white coats from mental hospital. Basically the opinion expressed are not coming scholarship, but from Jatiya hatred. It is nonsensical reaction against the perceived exploitations by Khasa group. We may argue about it. However, it is a political issue, to be solved by better performing democracy and public awareness. It cannot be solved by ignorant propaganda. The propaganda is about throwing mud at each and every good thing. Any way, here are a few notes to keep record straight.

1. Dasain Festival: Here is a note on the festival, and its significance. Ashur in the legend is a myth, about good and evil. It is not a reality. By stretch of imagination it may be claimed that they are Assyrian. But what is the point? There is no body in India or otherwise, who are direct descendant of Mahishashur of the legend.

2. Dharma_Hinduism: The basic definition of Dharma. Dharma is not religion. Hinduism is the collection of all the Dharmas like: Shiva dharma, Buddha dharma, Vaishnav dharma, etc.

3. Tradition_Buddhism_Hinduism: Why people like Tuladhar, Shrestha, Tamang, Rais all are Hindus.

4. Aryan invasion theory: It never happened. On the contrary, Vedic people from India migrated to Iran, Germany and other places.

এই সময় ডিজিটাল ডেস্ক: প্লাবনের আশঙ্কা দেখচে রাজ্যের তিন জেলা। কারণ ডিভিসির জলাধার থেকে নতুন করে জল ছাড়ায় ফুলেফেঁপে উঠেছে দামোদর, অজয়, দারকেশ্বর, কংসাবতী নদী। বাড়তি জল ছাড়ার ফলে বর্ধমান, বাঁকুড়া, পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুরের বিস্তীর্ণ এলাকা প্লাবিত হতে পারে বলে আশঙ্কা।


ইতোমধ্যে পাঞ্চেত জলাধার থেকে ছাড়া হয়েছে ৮০ হাজার কিউসেক জল। ৩৫ হাজার কিউসেক জল ছাড়া হয়েছে মাইথন থেকে। জল ছাড়ার ফলে বর্ধমান, বাঁকুড়া, পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুরের নদীগুলিতে জল বাড়ছে। দারকেশ্বর, কংসাবতী, ভৈরোবাঁকি, শিলাবতী, শালি বাঁকুড়ার এই পাঁচটি নদীই ফুলে উঠেছে। একটানা বৃষ্টি চললে জেলার বিস্তীর্ণ এলাকা প্লাবিত হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে। একই পরিস্থিতি পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুরের সাঁকরাইল, নয়াগ্রাম, গোপীবল্লভপুরে।


এদিকে প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগের জেরে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত বর্ধমানের আউশগ্রামের বিস্তীর্ণ এলাকা। বনকুল, নৃসিংহপুর-সহ বেশ কয়েকটি গ্রাম ঝড়ের তাণ্ডবে সম্পূর্ণ বিপর্যস্ত। শুধুমাত্র বনকুল গ্রামেই ৩০০-র বেশি বাড়ি ভেঙে পড়েছে। বনকুল গ্রামে প্রশাসনের তরফে ত্রাণ শিবির খোলা হয়েছে। ঝড়ের তাণ্ডবে বিদ্যুতের খুঁটি উপড়ে পড়ায় গোটা অঞ্চলে বিদ্যুত পরিষেবা ব্যাহত। আবার গাছ পড়ে রাস্তা বন্ধ থাকার কারণে ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত এলাকাগুলিতে ত্রাণ সামগ্রী পৌঁছানোর ক্ষেত্রেও সমস্যা দেখা দিয়েছে।


ডিভিসি নতুন করে জল ছাড়ায় বর্ধমান, হুগলির বেশ কিছু অংশ প্লাবিত হওয়ার আশঙ্কা দেখা দিয়েছে। কাল পাঞ্চেত  থেকে ছাড়া হয়েছে ৮০ হাজার কিউসেক জল। ৩৫ হাজার কিউসেক জল ছাড়া হয়েছে মাইথন থেকে। তবে আজ সকালে জল ছাড়ার পরিমান কমিয়ে ১ লক্ষ ৫ হাজার কিউসেক করা হয়েছে।


ডিভিসির জল ছাড়ায় বন্যার আশঙ্কা তৈরি হয়েছে হুগলির খানাকুল, আরামবাগের নতী তীরবর্তী এলকায়। ইতিমধ্যেই আরামবাগের সালেপুর থেকে দুশো পরিবারকে অন্যত্র সরিয়ে নিয়ে যাওয়া হয়েছে। পূর্ব মেদিনীপুরের পাঁশকুড়ার রাধবন এলাকায় সিলাইবাসকি নদীর জল ঢুকছে।


এদিকে ঝাড়খণ্ডে রাতের দিকে বৃষ্টি কম হওয়ায় ঝাড়খণ্ড লাগোয় জেলা গুলিতে প্লাবনের আশঙ্কা কমলেও গতকাল রাতে গালুডির ছাড়া জলে দাঁতনের কুড়িটি গ্রাম প্লাবিত হয়েছে। জলবেড়েছে দ্বারকেশ্বর, কংসাবতী, ভৈরোবাঁকি, শিলাবতী, শালি বাঁকুড়ার পাঁচটি নদীতেই।


ঝাড়খণ্ডের জলে পশ্চিম মেদিনীপুরের সাঁকরাইল, নয়াগ্রাম, গোপীবল্লভপুরের কিছু অংশ প্লাবিত। অন্যদিকে, দক্ষিণ বিহার ও ঝাড়খণ্ডে নিম্নচাপের জেরে উত্তরবঙ্গ ও দক্ষিণবঙ্গের তিন জেলায় ভারী বৃষ্টির পূর্বাভাস দিয়েছে আবহাওয়া দফতর। কলকাতাতেও বৃষ্টি চলবে বলে জানানো হয়েছে।

आज हम सब जानते हैं की राक्षस असुर और दानव आदिवासी दलित और भारत के मूल निवासी थे । जिन्हें आर्यों ने मारा था। लेकिन आपको क्या बताया गया है ? यही ना किराक्षसों, दानवों और असुरों को इसलिए मारा गया क्योंकि वो काले होते थे , उनके सींग होते थे , उनके बड़े बड़े दांत होते थे। वो क्रूर होते थे , वो पवित्र यज्ञ की अग्नि को बुझा देते थे।राक्षस दानव और असुर मांस खाते थे शराब पीते थे और हाहाहा कर के हँसते थे। इसलिए हमारे देवता इन असुरों , दानवों और राक्षसों को मार देते थे। और हमारे देवता गोरे होते थे , वो बिलकुल हमारी तरह शांत , सुंदर पवित्र होते थे। देवता हमारी तरह सिर्फ मोहक ढंग से मंद मंद मुस्कुराते थे। देवता हमारी यज्ञ की अग्नि की रक्षा करते थे। देवता सुगन्धित ,फूलों पर चलने वाले, स्वर्ण आभूषण पहने, फल खाने वाले , सुंदर संगीत प्रेमी मधुर सौम्य और रमणीय होते थे। कुछ समय बाद जब मैं मर जाऊंगा। और आपको सोनी सोरी के ऊपर हुए अत्याचारों और हमारी अपनी पुलिस की क्रूरता के बारे में बताने वाला कोई नहीं होगा। तब पुलिस की मालिक सरकार अपने इतिहास में लिखेगी की ''सोनी सोरी एक क्रूर और हत्यारी नक्सली आतंकवादी थी। वह छोटे बच्चों को भी मारती थी। वह हत्याएं करने के बाद हाहाहा कर के हंसती थी। इसलिए हमारे एक बहादुर पुलिस के देवता जैसे आफिसर अंकित गर्ग ने अपनी जान हथेली पर रख कर उस राक्षसनी सोनी सोरी को दंड दिया जिससे सोनी सोरी के क्रूर कर्म रुक गए और प्रजा शांती से रहने लगी। पवित्र आत्मा अंकित गर्ग को इस वीर कर्म के लिए भारत पुण्य भूमि के तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति ने वीरता पदक देकर सम्मानित किया।'' असल में आपकी स्मृति में हमेशा विजेताओं की कहानियाँ डाली जाती हैं , इसलिए आपका मस्तिष्क खुद को विजेता प्रजाति का मानने लगता है। हारी हुई प्रजाति की कहानियों में निराशा , ग्लानी और शोक होता है . इसलिए आप खुद को हार की कहानियों वाली प्रजाति से जोड़ना नहीं चाहते। यही कारण है की आज भी करोड़ों दलित और आदिवासी भी खुद को भारत की आक्रामक और हत्यारी परम्परा से जोड़ने में फक्र महसूस करते हैं। ताकि वे भी एक गर्व भाव से जी सकें। खुद सोचिये आपके दिमाग में कितना सच ज्ञान है और कितना कचरा है ? और क्या आप सच में सत्य जानना चाहते हैं ? या आप झूठे गर्व भाव से भरे रहना चाहते हैं और सच बोलने वाला आपको अपना शत्रु लगता है ? आपका झूठा गर्व भाव आपकी प्रगति में बाधा है। इससे मुक्त हुए बिना आप एक समता युक्त सुखी संसार बना ही नहीं सकते।

The new concept 'solidarity economy' was the centre focus, which is very successful in Brazil. A petition to the UK PM regarding caste-discrimination in the UK

Dear friends,

I am sorry about being the prime cause of delay in putting out our petition. But may be the delay would not really have prevented the Equality Office of the British Government from issuing its document "Caste legislation introduction – programme and timetable"

2.       Sign the petition but at the same time see I we can improve upon the same. If we can, circulate the same. It would not hurt the cause to present more than one petition for the same cause.

We, the undersigned, petition the Government to implement the Caste Discrimination provisions of the Equality Act 2010 without delay.

Caste-based discrimination is a fact in the UK in 2013. This is three years after the Equality Act was passed in parliament to make the practice unlawful and bring in protection for victims.

But, the Government has not still said when the law will come into force instead setting out two more years of research, consultations and Parliamentary debate taking us past the date of the next General Election in 2015.

We believe that this is not only an unnecessary delay, that will lead to further suffering by victims of discrimination, but that it provides an opportunity to those who oppose caste equality to lobby for exemptions and even further delay.

A new timetable must be laid out that sees this legislation implemented with the urgency it deserves.

Why is this important?

Victims of Caste based discrimination deserve immediate legal protection to avoid continued suffering.  The Government is proposing an unacceptable delay in bringing what is already law, into force.

Here are just some of the many hundreds of cases showing that caste-based discrimination is a fact in the UK in 2013.

- Mr G endured intimidating, hostile and degrading environment at the hands of so called Upper Castes at his work place. He was forced to resort to hunger strike action to draw attention of his employer to his plight.

- An elderly lady is not given attention in a care home in accordance with her care plan due to discriminatory actions of Upper Caste care administrator.

- Children in schools routinely face caste labelling and name-calling resulting in Bullying and harassment in Schools.  A Pupil endured Caste bullying where he could not complete GCSE projects due to negativity and violence of those around him.

- A professional couple at a law firm endured caste based bullying, intimidation and harassment as a consequence of inter-caste marriage.  Superiors at work did everything to dissuade them from marrying resulting in harassment, snide remarks and denial of pay hike and promotion, eventually culminating in his dismissal after several years in service and her resignation.

This discrimination is confirmed not only by the many victims but also by Government-commissioned independent research from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (2010) and other sources (see http : //niesr.ac.uk/sites/default/files/publications/caste-discrimination.pdf).

We therefore demand the following:

1 The Government must act quickly to give effect to Parliament's intention and to protect actual and potential victims of caste discrimination;

2 The Government must act immediately to set a new and prompt timetable for any further consultation;

3 Any consultation must start as soon as possible and must last no longer than 12 weeks; and

4 Any consultation must in any event end in sufficient time for the making of an Order under the terms of s.9(5) of the Equality Act 2010 by June 2014 at the latest.

The European Parliament,

–   having regard to its resolutions of 13 December 2012 on caste discrimination in India(1), of 17 January 2013 on violence against women in India(2), of 1 February 2007 on the Human Rights Situation of the Dalits in India(3) and of 18 April 2012 on the Annual Report on Human Rights in the World and the European Union's policy on the matter, including implications for the EU's strategic human rights policy(4),

–   having regard to international human rights conventions, including the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) and General Recommendation XXIX of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,

–   having regard to the draft UN Principles and Guidelines for the Effective Elimination of Discrimination based on Work and Descent(5), published by the Human Rights Council,

–   having regard to the serious concerns, observations and recommendations of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights with regard to caste discrimination,

–   having regard to recent recommendations by UN treaty bodies and UN Special Procedures mandate-holders on the topic of caste-based discrimination,

–   having regard to the report of 24 May 2011 of the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance(6), and to the reports of the Universal Periodic Reviews of caste-affected countries,

–   having regard to the Parliament study entitled 'A human rights and poverty review: EU action in addressing caste-based discrimination',

–   having regard to the oral question to the Commission of 18 September 2013 on caste‑based discrimination (O‑000091/2013 – B7‑0507/2013),

–   having regard to Rules 115(5) and 110(2) of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas caste denotes a socio-religious context, as in Asia, where those who fall outside the caste system are considered 'impure' and 'untouchable' by nature, but also, more broadly, a system of rigid social stratification into ranked groups defined by descent and occupation; whereas discrimination based on work and descent, being the more encompassing term preferred by the UN, is a form of discrimination prohibited by international human rights law as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the CERD, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and International Labour Organisation Convention No 111;

B.  whereas in June 2011 Githu Muigai, the UN Special Rapporteur on racism, stressed that it is essential to avoid establishing any hierarchy among the different manifestations of discrimination, even though they may vary in nature and degree depending on the historical, geographical and cultural context, including 'the Roma community in Europe and victims of caste systems in Africa, Asia and the Middle East';

C. whereas despite the steps taken by the governments of some caste-affected countries to provide constitutional and legislative protection and introduce special measures against caste discrimination and untouchability, caste discrimination continues to be widespread and persistent, affecting an estimated 260 million people worldwide;

D. whereas caste-based discrimination exists in numerous countries across the globe, with the highest number of victims being found in South Asia; whereas, however, there are large concentrations of victims in other areas, including Africa, the Middle East and the diaspora community;

E.  whereas non-implementation of legislation and policies and the lack of effective remedies and effectively functioning state institutions, the judiciary and police included, remain major obstacles to eliminating caste-based discrimination;

F.  whereas the provision of disaggregated data and the need for special legislation and measures to protect against caste discrimination remain unaddressed in many affected countries;

G. whereas despite the efforts of governments and, increasingly, of some international agencies, castes continue to suffer from severe forms of social exclusion, poverty, violence, segregation, physical and verbal abuse linked to prejudices and a concept of purity and pollution;

H. whereas untouchability practices remain widespread and are taking on modern forms; whereas affected communities face restricted political participation and serious discrimination in the labour market;

I.   whereas in a few countries, such as India, mandatory affirmative action has to some extent contributed to the inclusion of Dalits in the public sector, but whereas the lack of protective non-discrimination measures in the labour market and the private sector adds to exclusion and growing inequalities;

J.   whereas the ILO estimates that the overwhelming majority of bonded labour victims in South Asia are from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes; whereas forced and bonded labour is particularly widespread in the agriculture, mining and garment production sectors, which supply products to a number of multinational and European companies;

K. whereas non-discrimination in employment is one of the four fundamental labour rights and is included in international guidelines and frameworks for business such as the UN Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights, the OECD Guidelines and the ISO 26000 Guidance on Social Responsibility, which specifically mentions caste-based discrimination as a serious form of discrimination;

L.  whereas the governments and authorities of caste-affected countries are urged to take note of the draft UN Principles and Guidelines for the Effective Elimination of Discrimination based on Work and Descent, to take all necessary measures to eliminate and prevent caste‑based discrimination, to address any implementation gaps at federal, state, regional and local level and to implement, amend or introduce special legislation and policy measures for the protection and promotion of the rights of Dalits and similarly caste‑affected groups;

1.  Condemns the continuing human rights violations committed against people suffering from caste hierarchies and caste-based discrimination, including the denial of equality and of access to the legal system and to employment, continued segregation and caste-induced barriers to the achievement of basic human rights and development;

2.  Considers that identity cards should avoid references to caste, as these are contrary to the principles of equality and social mobility;

3.  Welcomes the report by Githu Muigai, the UN Special Rapporteur on racism, and stresses that all victims of caste discrimination throughout the world should receive the same attention and protection; stresses, more broadly, that all forms of racism and discrimination should be addressed with the same emphasis and determination, including in Europe;

4.  Expresses its serious concern that the social exclusion of Dalits and similarly affected communities leads to high levels of poverty among affected population groups and to exclusion, or reduced benefits, from development processes; stresses, furthermore, that it precludes their involvement in decision-making and governance and their meaningful participation in public and civil life;

5.  Remains alarmed at the persistently large number of reported and unreported cases of atrocities and untouchability practices in caste-affected countries, including India, and at the widespread impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of crimes against Dalits and other victims of caste-based human rights violations; recalls that in certain countries perpetrators of such discrimination hold high-level government positions;

6.  Reiterates its serious concern about the violence perpetrated against Dalit women and other women from similarly affected communities in societies with caste systems, who often do not report such violence for fear of threats to their personal safety or of social exclusion, and about the multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination based on caste, gender and religion affecting Dalit women and women from minority communities, leading to forced conversions, abductions, forced prostitution, and sexual abuse by members of dominant castes;

7.  Stresses the need to promote an enabling environment for civil society and human rights defenders working with people affected by caste discrimination in order to ensure their security and avoid any impediments to, or stigmatisation or restriction of, their work; stresses that such an environment should include access to funding, cooperation with UN human rights bodies and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) accreditation;

8.  Calls for the EU to promote the draft UN Principles and Guidelines for the Effective Elimination of Discrimination based on Work and Descent as a guiding framework for eliminating caste discrimination, and to promote their endorsement by the UN Human Rights Council;

9.  Calls on the Commission to recognise caste as a distinct form of discrimination rooted in the social and/or religious context, which must be tackled together with other grounds of discrimination, i.e. ethnicity, race, descent, religion, gender and sexuality, in EU efforts to fight all forms of discrimination; calls for the EU, in its policies and programmes, to consider people affected by caste-based discrimination as an identifiable group;

10. Urges the Commission and the European External Action Service (EEAS) to mainstream the fight against caste-based discrimination in EU legislation, policies and programming documents and to adopt operational guidelines for its implementation; calls on the EEAS to enhance monitoring and evaluation mechanisms in order to assess effectively the impact of EU action on the situation of people affected by this form of discrimination;

11. Recommends that the EU carry out a systematic assessment of the impact of trade and/or investment agreements on groups affected by caste discrimination, and address these issues with industry representatives, government authorities and relevant civil society organisations;

12. Calls for the inclusion of caste-based discrimination as a human rights issue in future EU human rights policies, strategies and action plans;

13. Calls on the Commission to provide stronger support for development projects combating caste-based discrimination as a serious human rights violation that exacerbates poverty, and to take this form of discrimination into account in all projects with a focus on education, women, access to justice, political participation or labour in relevant countries;

14. Calls on the Commission to develop and apply caste-sensitive approaches in times of humanitarian crisis and ensure that humanitarian aid is delivered to all marginalised groups, including people suffering from caste-based discrimination;

15. Urges the EU to raise the issue of caste-based discrimination at the highest level with the governments of affected countries during bilateral summits and other international meetings;

16. Encourages the EEAS to strengthen its policy and human rights dialogues and promote joint initiatives to eliminate caste discrimination with the governments of states, such as India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, where caste-affected communities are subjected to so-called 'untouchability practices', and, more broadly, to combat discrimination based on work and descent, which occurs in various countries, including Yemen, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal and Somalia; recalls that caste discrimination has gone unmentioned in agreements with many of these states;

17. Calls on the Commission and the EEAS to include, where relevant, a 'caste-based discrimination clause' in all trade and association agreements;

18. Recommends that the EU promote non-discriminatory and inclusive policies and procedures in business operations with caste-affected countries, including affirmative action for Dalits and similarly affected people in the labour market and the private sector;

19. Calls for the EU to promote regular, broad consultation with civil society on caste-based discrimination and to allocate adequate resources to civil society organisations for fighting caste discrimination;

20. Calls for the EU to promote a caste-sensitive post-2015 development agenda, with the reduction of inequalities based on or aggravated by caste as a crucial and measurable goal, ensuring that caste discrimination is explicitly addressed as a major structural factor underlying poverty, and as a root cause of structural inequalities;

21. Instructs its President to forward this resolution to the Vice-President of the Commission / High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Council, the Commission, the EU Special Representative for Human Rights, the governments and parliaments of the Member States, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the United Nations Human Rights Council.

उत्तरी भारत के थोड़े से सवर्ण पुरुषों की आस्था भारत की राष्ट्रीय आस्था मान ली गयी है।

उत्तर भारत की पुरुष कल्पनाएँ भारत की राष्ट्रीय आस्था मान ली गयी हैं अब इन की रक्षा के लिए भारत की अदालतें और सरकारें एक टांग पर तत्पर खडी हैं।

भारत के मन में भारत का अतीत केसरिया वस्त्र पहने ऋषी मुनी और तलवाररधारी राजा हैं। इस पूरी कल्पना में दलितों पर हुए अत्याचार नहीं हैं। इस कल्पना में मुसलमान खलनायक हैं। भारत की राष्ट्रीय कल्पना में मुसलमान दरअसल देशद्रोही हैं।

भारत का सर्वोच्च न्यायलय जातीय हिंसा से लथपथ पर्व के उपलक्ष में अवकाश मनाता है।
और हम मानते हैं कि यह तंत्र आदिवासियों के वध पर नाराज़ होगा ?

इसी उत्तर भारतीय पुरुष अन्तश्चेतना को ही ''राष्ट्र की सामूहिक चेतना'' मान कर उसे संतुष्ट करने के लिए इस देश की अदालतें बिना किसी प्रत्यक्ष सबूत के अफज़ल को बेशर्मी के साथ फांसी पर लटकाती हैं

सोनी सोरी नाम की आदिवासी महिला की कोख में पत्थर भरने वाले पुलिस अधिकारी को बचाने के लिए भारत सरकार अपने खर्चे पर मुकदमा लडती है और उस पुलिस अधिकारी को भारत का राष्ट्रपति वीरता पुरस्कार देता है।

भारत को अपनी राष्ट्रीयता को पुनर्भाषित करना ही होगा और बताना होगा कि राष्ट्रीय क्या है और अराष्ट्रीय क्या है ?

हमें बताना ही होगा की किसी का मुसलमान या इसाई होना उसे दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण परिस्थिति में क्यों डाल देता है। जबकि संविधान में सबकी समानता की बात लिखी गयी है।

जिस दिन संविधान को असल लागू किया जायेगा उस दिन ये उत्तर भारतीय सवर्ण पुरुष देश में खून की नदियाँ बहा देंगे।

रिलायंस कंपनी के एक वकील से मिलना हुआ तो मालूम चला कि रिलायंस इन दिनों 4 जी टावर लगाने में जुटा है.जिसके तहत यूपी में तीन हजार टावर लगने हैं..कृषि भूमि में टावर लगाने की मनाही है उसके बावजूद किसानों से 20-20 साल का बौंड भराकर उनकी कृषि भूमि पर धड़ल्ले से टावर लगाये जा रहे हैं. कंपनी जमीन का मासिक किराया मात्र दो हजार से पांच हजार तक दे रही है..चूँकि एक टावर के लिए 3600 स्क्वायर फीट स्थान की जरूरत होती है लिहाजा कंपनी की बार्गनर टीम किसान को कनविंस करती है कि इस जमीन से साल भर में तुम 36 हजार किसी कीमत में नहीं कम पाओगे. यहाँ तुम फायदे में ही रहोगे.इससे इतर जो टावर घरों में लगाये जा रहे उसकी भी बहुत नामामुली कीमत कंपनी दे रही है किराए के लोभवश जो लोग रेडिएशन को दावत दे उन्हें दस साल बाद अपने बच्चों को देख माजरा समझ आ जाएगा..इससे दुखद यह कि टावर वाले घर के पडोसी मुफ्त में रेडिएशन से संक्रमित होंगे....दरअसल उच्च तकनीकी के प्रयोगों के साथ साथ उसके हार्मफुल प्रभावों से निपटने के शोध व उपाय भी साथ साथ नहीं किये गए तो इसका बड़ा खामियाजा भुगतना पड़ेगा. और निश्चित ही यह खामियाजा संसाधनों से वंचित तबके को ही ज्यादा उठाना पड़ेगा..

आज हम सब जानते हैं की राक्षस असुर और दानव आदिवासी दलित और भारत के मूल निवासी थे । जिन्हें आर्यों ने मारा था। लेकिन आपको क्या बताया गया है ? यही ना किराक्षसों, दानवों और असुरों को इसलिए मारा गया क्योंकि वो काले होते थे , उनके सींग होते थे , उनके बड़े बड़े दांत होते थे। वो क्रूर होते थे , वो पवित्र यज्ञ की अग्नि को बुझा देते थे।राक्षस दानव और असुर मांस खाते थे शराब पीते थे और हाहाहा कर के हँसते थे। इसलिए हमारे देवता इन असुरों , दानवों और राक्षसों को मार देते थे। और हमारे देवता गोरे होते थे , वो बिलकुल हमारी तरह शांत , सुंदर पवित्र होते थे। देवता हमारी तरह सिर्फ मोहक ढंग से मंद मंद मुस्कुराते थे। देवता हमारी यज्ञ की अग्नि की रक्षा करते थे। देवता सुगन्धित ,फूलों पर चलने वाले, स्वर्ण आभूषण पहने, फल खाने वाले , सुंदर संगीत प्रेमी मधुर सौम्य और रमणीय होते थे। कुछ समय बाद जब मैं मर जाऊंगा। और आपको सोनी सोरी के ऊपर हुए अत्याचारों और हमारी अपनी पुलिस की क्रूरता के बारे में बताने वाला कोई नहीं होगा। तब पुलिस की मालिक सरकार अपने इतिहास में लिखेगी की ''सोनी सोरी एक क्रूर और हत्यारी नक्सली आतंकवादी थी। वह छोटे बच्चों को भी मारती थी। वह हत्याएं करने के बाद हाहाहा कर के हंसती थी। इसलिए हमारे एक बहादुर पुलिस के देवता जैसे आफिसर अंकित गर्ग ने अपनी जान हथेली पर रख कर उस राक्षसनी सोनी सोरी को दंड दिया जिससे सोनी सोरी के क्रूर कर्म रुक गए और प्रजा शांती से रहने लगी। पवित्र आत्मा अंकित गर्ग को इस वीर कर्म के लिए भारत पुण्य भूमि के तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति ने वीरता पदक देकर सम्मानित किया।'' असल में आपकी स्मृति में हमेशा विजेताओं की कहानियाँ डाली जाती हैं , इसलिए आपका मस्तिष्क खुद को विजेता प्रजाति का मानने लगता है। हारी हुई प्रजाति की कहानियों में निराशा , ग्लानी और शोक होता है . इसलिए आप खुद को हार की कहानियों वाली प्रजाति से जोड़ना नहीं चाहते। यही कारण है की आज भी करोड़ों दलित और आदिवासी भी खुद को भारत की आक्रामक और हत्यारी परम्परा से जोड़ने में फक्र महसूस करते हैं। ताकि वे भी एक गर्व भाव से जी सकें। खुद सोचिये आपके दिमाग में कितना सच ज्ञान है और कितना कचरा है ? और क्या आप सच में सत्य जानना चाहते हैं ? या आप झूठे गर्व भाव से भरे रहना चाहते हैं और सच बोलने वाला आपको अपना शत्रु लगता है ? आपका झूठा गर्व भाव आपकी प्रगति में बाधा है। इससे मुक्त हुए बिना आप एक समता युक्त सुखी संसार बना ही नहीं सकते।

रतनगढ़ मंदिर के निकट भगदड़ के मामले में मध्य प्रदेश सरकार ने देर रात दतिया के जिलाधिकारी के अलावा तीन वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों को निलंबित कर दिया.

इस हादसे में 116 श्रद्धालुओं की जान गई है और बड़ी संख्या में लोग घायल हो गए हैं. यह निर्णय चुनाव आयोग की मंजूरी लेने के बाद लिया गया है क्योंकि राज्य में विधानसभा चुनावों की घोषणा के बाद से ही आचार संहिता लागू है.

दतिया के जिलाधिकारी संकेत भोंदवें, पुलिस अधीक्षक सीएस सोलंकी, एसडीएम महिप तेजस्वी और एसडीओपी बीएन बसावे को निलंबित किया गया है.

राज्य सरकार ने आज दिन में राज्य चुनाव आयोग से सिफारिश की थी कि वह दतिया के जिलाधिकारी, पुलिस अधीक्षक, सब डिविजनल मजिस्ट्रेट, सब डिविजनल पुलिस अधिकारी और सेवधा पुलिस थाने के पूरे स्टाफ को इस घटना के संबंध में निलंबित कर दे.

चूंकि जिलाधिकारी जिला निर्वाचन अधिकारी भी हैं इसलिए राज्य सरकार मध्यप्रदेश के मुख्य निर्वाचन अधिकारी के साथ संपर्क में थी. उसने दूसरे अधिकारी का नाम सुझाया था और चुनाव आयोग ने रघुराज के नाम को मंजूरी दे दी है. चुनाव आयोग के सूत्रों ने बताया कि आरके मराठे दतिया के नए पुलिस अधीक्षक होंगे.

आधिकारिक सूत्रों ने बताया कि जिलाधिकारी, पुलिस अधीक्षक और अन्य अधिकारियों को निलंबित करने का निर्णय मुख्यमंत्री शिवराज सिंह चौहान के दतिया दौरे के बाद लिया गया. मुख्यमंत्री कल हुए इस हादसे का जायजा लेने के लिए दतिया गए थे.

मुख्यमंत्री ने स्थिति का जायजा लेने के बाद इस भगदड़ के लिए प्राथमिक रुप से इन अधिकारियों को जिम्मेदार पाया. राज्य में अगले महीने विधानसभा चुनाव होने हैं.

इस घटना की जांच के लिए एक जाँच आयोग बना दिया है जिसकी रिपोर्ट करीब दो महीने में आनी है और उसके 15 दिन बाद कार्रवाई की जानी है. चौहान घटनास्थल पर जाना चाहते थे लेकिन चुनाव आयोग की अनुमति नहीं मिलने के कारण वह वहां नहीं जा सके.

वहीँ, लोगों ने कहा है कि खाकी कपड़े पहने हुए लोगों ने (पुलिस?) जीवित घायलों और मृतकों के जेवर और अन्य मूल्यवान सामान आदि छीन लिए, महिलाओं की बालियाँ, पायल, मंगलसूत्र उतार लिए, जीवितों को पुल से उठा कर नदी में फेंक दिया था जिनमें बच्चे भी थे.

केंद्रीय ऊर्जा राज्यमंत्री ज्योतिरादित्य सिंधिया ने भी सोमवार को रतनगढ़ का दौरा किया और पीड़ितों से मुलाकात की. उन्होंने भारतीय जनता पार्टी का नाम लिए बगैर कहा है कि भगवान के नाम पर राजनीति करने वालों ने ही 300 लोगों को भगवान के पास पहुंचा दिया है, जबकि प्रशासन ने सिर्फ 109 लोगों की ही मौत का आंकड़ा दिया है.

राज्य के मुख्यमंत्री शिवराज सिंह चौहान हादसे के दूसरे दिन मंगलवार को दतिया जिला चिकित्सालय पहुंचकर रतनगढ़ मरीजों का हाल जाना. उन्होंने संवाददाताओं से चर्चा करते हुए कहा कि सरकार पीड़ितों के साथ है. चुनाव आचार संहिता के चलते अपनी लाचारी का हवाला देते हुए कहा कि मृतकों के परिजनों को निर्वाचन आयोग की अनुमति से प्राकृतिक आपदा प्रभावितों की तरह ही डेढ़ लाख का मुआवजा दिया गया है.

Durga Puja (Bengaliদুর্গা পূজা,Bengali pronunciation: [d̪urɡa pudʒa]; listen: About this sound Durga Puja (help·info), 'Worship of Durga'), also referred to as Durgotsava (Bengali:দুর্গোৎসব Bengali pronunciation: [d̪urɡot̪ʃɔb], listen: About this sound Durgotsava (help·info), 'Festival of Durga') or Sharadotsav is an annual Hindu festival in South Asia that celebrates worship of the Hindu goddess Durga. It refers to all the six days observed as MahalayaShashthi,Maha SaptamiMaha AshtamiMaha Navami and Vijayadashami. The dates of Durga Puja celebrations are set according to the traditional Hindu calendar and the fortnight corresponding to the festival is called Devi Paksha, 'Fortnight of the Goddess'). Devi Paksha is preceded by Mahalaya, the last day of the previous fortnight Pitri Paksha, 'Fortnight of the Forefathers'), and is ended on Kojagori Lokkhi Puja ('Worship of Goddess Lakshmi on Kojagori Full Moon Night').

Durga Puja is widely celebrated in the Indian states of AssamBiharJharkhand,ManipurOdishaTripura and West Bengal, where it is a five-day annual holiday.[3] InWest Bengal and Tripura, which has a majority of Bengali Hindus, it is the biggest festival of the year. Not only is it the biggest Hindu festival celebrated throughout the state, it is also the most significant socio-cultural event in Bengali Hindu society. Apart from eastern India, Durga Puja is also celebrated in DelhiUttar PradeshMaharashtraGujarat,PunjabKashmirAndhra PradeshKarnataka and Kerala. Durga Puja is also celebrated as a major festival in Nepal where 91% is Hindu. It is also celebrated in Bangladeshwhere the 8% population is Hindu. Nowadays, many diaspora Bengali cultural organisations arrange for Durgotsab in countries such as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, The Netherlands, Singapore and Kuwait, among others. In 2006, a grand Durga Puja ceremony was held in the Great Court of the British Museum.[4]

The prominence of Durga Puja increased gradually during the British Raj in Bengal.[5] After the Hindu reformists identified Durga with India, she became an icon for the Indian independence movement.[6] In the first quarter of the 20th century, the tradition of Baroyari or Community Puja was popularised due to this. After independence, Durga Puja became one of the largest celebrated festivals in the whole world.

Durga Puja also includes the worship of Shiva, who is Durga's consort (Durga is an aspect of GoddessParvati), in addition to LakshmiSaraswati with Ganesha and Kartikeya, who are considered to be Durga's children.[7] Worship of mother nature is done, through nine types of plant (called "Kala Bou"), including a plantain (banana) tree, which represent nine divine forms of Goddess Durga.[8] Modern traditions have come to include the display of decorated pandals and artistically depicted idols (murti) of Durga, exchange of Vijaya greetings and publication of Puja Annuals.

Names[edit]

In Bengal, Durga Puja is also called Akalbodhan ('untimely awakening of Durga'), Sharadiya Pujo ('autumnal worship'), Sharodotsab(Bengaliশারদোৎসব ('festival of autumn'), Maha Pujo ('grand puja'), Maayer Pujo ('worship of the Mother) or merely as Puja or Pujo. InEast Bengal (Bangladesh), Durga Puja used to be celebrated as Bhagabati Puja. It is also called Durga Puja in Bihar, Assam, Odisha,Delhi and Madhya Pradesh.[9]

Puja is called Navaratri Puja in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala and Maharashtra,[10] Kullu Dussehra in Kullu Valley, Himachal Pradesh,[11] Mysore Dussehra in Mysore, Karnataka[12] and Bommai Golu in Tamil Nadu and Bommala koluvu in Andhra Pradesh.[13]

Origin of the autumnal ceremony 'Sharadiya'[edit]

The actual worship of the Goddess Durga as stipulated by the Hindu scriptures falls in the month of Chaitra, which roughly overlaps with March or April and is called Basanti Durga Puja. This ceremony is not observed by many and is restricted to a handful in the state of West Bengal. The more popular form, which is also known as Sharadiya (Autumnal) Durga Puja, is celebrated later in the year with the dates falling either in September or October.[14]Since the Goddess is invoked at the wrong time, it is called "Akaal Bodhon" in Bengali.

One of the earliest evidence of the autumnal celebration can be found in the Tripura Buranji, where it is described that the envoy of the Twipra Kingdom, Rameshwar Nyayalankar, was invited to witness the Durga puja at Rangpur, the capital of the Ahom kingdom, in 1711.[15]

While the most recent revival of the Autumnal worship of Goddess Durga can be traced to revivalist tendencies in the early freedom movement in Bengal, differences remain in the historical reason behind the revival. One school of thought is of the opinion that the first such Puja was organised by Raja Nabakrishna Deb of the Shobhabazar Rajbari of Calcutta in honour of Lord Clive in the year 1757. The puja was organised because Clive wished to pay thanks for his victory in the Battle of Plassey. He was unable to do so in a Church because the only church in Calcutta at that time was destroyed by Siraj-ud-Daulah. Indeed many wealthy mercantile and Zamindar families in Bengal made British officers of the East India Company guests of honour in the Pujas. The hosts vied with one another in arranging the most sumptuous fares, decorations and entertainment for their guests. This was deemed necessary since the company was in charge of a large part of India including Bengal after the battles of Plassey and Buxar.[16] However, this particular claim has been refuted by the Sovabazar Rajbari. In a public announcement during the Durga Puja of 2011, notice boards were placed at the entrance of the puja, clarifying the Rajbari's official position.

There is also a mythological belief that Lord Ram, who was a Durga worshiper, worshiped Goddess Durga before going for a war withRavana. Rama had performed "Chandi Homa" and invoked the blessings of Durga, who blessed Rama with secret knowledge of the way to kill Ravana. On the day of Ashvin Shukla Dashami, Rama's party found Sita and defeated Ravana. This day is thus also celebrated as Dussehra.

History[edit]

The Durga puja has been celebrated since the medieval period, and has evolved and adapted to the world as time passed. A considerable literature exists around Durga in the Bengali language and its early forms, including avnirnaya (11th century), Durgabhaktitarangini by Vidyapati (a famous Maithili poet of 14th century), but the goddess Durga was not fully integrated into the Hindu pantheon, primarily in Bengal, in the 16th century. Early forms of Durgostavs (Durga festivals) were primarily private worship in personal residences with the use of various musical instruments such as the mridanga, mandira, and smakhya. It was during the 18th century, however, that the worship of Durga became popular among the land aristrocrats of Bengal, the Zamindars. Prominent Pujas were conducted by the zamindars and jagirdars, being enriched by emerging British rule, including Raja Nabakrishna Deb, of Shobhabajar, who initiated an elaborate Puja at his residence. These celebrations brought the Durgostavs out of individual homes, and into the public sphere. Festivities were celebrated as a community, where royalty and peasantry were welcomed into the home of the zamindar or bania (merchant) to feast together. The festivities became heavily centred around entertainment -music and female dancers- as well as lavish feasts that continued for the entire month. In the nineteenth century, the Pujas celebrated placed less emphasis on elaborate celebration and feasting, and more on including all of the community in the celebration. They moved from being a show of wealth and authority by royalty and merchants back to a festival of worship and community. Many of these old puja exist till now. Interestingly the oldest such Puja to be conducted at the same venue is located inRameswarpurOdisha, where it has been continued since the last four centuries; starting from the time when the Ghosh Mahashays from Kotarang migrated there as a part of Todarmal's contingent during Akbar's rule. Today, the culture of Durga Puja has shifted from the princely houses to Sarbojanin (literally, "involving all") forms. The first such puja was held at Guptipara — it was called barowari(baro meaning twelve and yar meaning friends)

Today's Puja, however, goes far beyond religion. In fact, visiting the pandals recent years, one can only say that Durgapuja is the largest outdoor art festival on earth. The music, dancing, and art displayed and performed during the Durga puja played an integral part in connecting the community in Bengal, and eventually across India and the world today. In the 1990s, a preponderance of architectural models came up on the pandal exteriors, but today the art motif extends to elaborate interiors, executed by trained artists, with consistent stylistic elements, carefully executed and bearing the name of the artist.

The sculpture of the idol itself has evolved. The worship always depicts Durga with her four children, and occasionally two attendant deities and some banana-tree figures. In the olden days, all five idols would be depicted in a single frame, traditionally called pata. Since the 1980s however, the trend is to depict each idol separately.

From the medieval period up through present day, the Durga puja not only celebrates the goddess, but brings the Hindu community together by integrating modernised aspects of entertainment and technology, while still maintaining the religious worship [17]

Customs[edit]

Durga puja mood starts off with the Mahishasuramardini – a two-hour radio programme that has been popular with the community since the 1950s.[18] While earlier it used to be conducted live, later a recorded version began to be broadcast. Bengalis traditionally wake up at 4 in the morning on Mahalaya day to listen to the enchanting voice of the late Birendra Krishna Bhadra and the late Pankaj Kumar Mullick on All India Radio as they recite hymns from the scriptures from the Devi Mahatmyam (Chandi Path).[19]

During the week of Durga Puja, in the entire state of West Bengal as well as in large enclaves of Bengalis everywhere, life comes to a complete standstill. In playgrounds, traffic circles, ponds—wherever space may be available—elaborate makeshift structures calledpandals are set up, many with nearly a year's worth of planning behind them. The word pandal means a temporary structure, made of bamboo and cloth, which is used as a temporary temple for the purpose of the puja. While some of the pandals are simple structures, others are often elaborate works of art with themes that rely heavily on history, current affairs and sometimes pure imagination.

Somewhere inside these complex edifices is a stage on which Durga reigns, standing on her lion mount, wielding ten weapons in her ten hands. This is the religious center of the festivities, and the crowds gather to offer flower worship orpushpanjali on the mornings, of the sixth to ninth days of the waxing moon fortnight known as Devi Paksha (lit. Devi = goddess; Paksha = period; Devi Paksha meaning the period of the goddess). Ritual drummers – dhakis, carrying large leather-strung dhak –– show off their skills during ritual dance worships called aarati. On the tenth day, Durga the mother returns to her husband, Shiva, ritualised through her immersion into the waters[20]–– Bishorjon also known as Bhaashan and Niranjan

At the end of six days, the idol is taken for immersion in a procession amid loud chants of 'Bolo Durga mai-ki jai' (glory be to Mother Durga') and 'aashchhe bochhor abar hobe' ('it will happen again next year') and drumbeats to the river or other water body. It is cast in the waters symbolic of the departure of the deity to her home with her husband in the Himalayas. After this, in a tradition called Vijaya Dashami, families visit each other and sweetmeats are offered to visitors (Dashami is literally "tenth day" and Vijay is "victory").

Durga Puja commemorates the annual visit of the Goddess with Her children to Her parents' home, leaving finally on the Dashami to be re-united with Shiva. This leaving ceremony is symbolised by the immersion of the idols on Dashami.[9]

Durga Puja is also a festivity of Good (Ma Durga) winning over the evil (Mahishasur the demon). It is a worship of power of Good which always wins over the bad.

Mantras, the integral part of Durga puja are accompanied by the rhythmic beatings of the dhak, smell of the incense sticks, 'dhoono' and flowers. These create the atmosphere of Durga puja. Chanting of mantras in Sanskrit is essential part of the Durga Puja Festival.[21] This is a part of Durga Puja's Pushpanjali Mantra:

"Om Jayanti, Mangala, Kali, Bhadrakali, Kapalini. Durga, Shiba, Kshama, Dhatri, Swaha, Swadha Namahstu Te.

Durga Slokas (which is also known as Devi Mantra)[23] praises Durga as symbol of all divine forces. According to the sloka, Durga is omnipresent as the embodiment of power, intelligence, peace, wealth, morality etc. A part of Durga Sloka is as follows:[24]

"Ya Devi sarva bhuteshu Matri rupena samsthita

Evolution of the Community or Sarbajanin puja[edit]

Initially the Puja was organised by rich families since they had the money to organise the festival. During the late 19th and early 20th century, a burgeoning middle class, primarily in Calcutta, wished to observe the Puja. They created the community or Sarbojanin Pujas.

These Pujas are organised by a committee which represents a locality or neighbourhood. They collect funds called "chaanda" through door-to-door subscriptions, lotteries, concerts etc. These funds are pooled and used for the expenses of pandal construction, idol construction, ceremonies etc. The balance of the fund is generally donated to a charitable cause, as decided by the committee. Corporate sponsorships of the Pujas have gained momentum since the late 1990s. Major Pujas in Calcutta and in major metro areas such asDelhi and Chennai now derive almost all of their funds from corporate sponsorships. Community fund drives have become a formality.

Despite the resources used to organise a Puja, entry of visitors into the Pandal is always free. Pujas in Calcutta and elsewhere experiment with innovative concepts every year. Communities have created prizes for Best Pandal, Best Puja, and other categories.

Creation of the idols[edit]

The entire process of creation of the idols (murti) from the collection of clay to the ornamentation is a holy process, supervised by rites and other rituals. On the Hindu date of Akshaya Tritiyawhen the Ratha Yatra is held, clay for the idols is collected from the banks of a river, preferably theGanges. There is age-old custom of collecting a handful of soil (punya mati) from the nishiddho pallis of Calcutta, literally 'forbidden territories', where sex workers live, and adding it to the clay mixture which goes into the making of the Durga idol.[25] After the required rites, the clay is transported from which the idols are fashioned. An important event is 'Chakkhu Daan', literally donation of the eyes. Starting with Devi Durga, the eyes of the idols are painted on Mahalaya or the first day of the Pujas. Before painting on the eyes, the artisans fast for a day and eat only vegetarian food.

Many Pujas in and around Kolkata buy their idols from Kumartuli (also Kumortuli), an artisans' town in north Calcutta.[26]

In 1610, the first Durga puja in Kolkata was supposedly celebrated by the Roychowdhuri family of Barisha. Though this was a private affair, community or 'Baroyari' Durga puja was started in Guptipara, in Hooghly by 12 young men when they were barred from participating in a family Durga puja in 1761. They formed a committee which accepted subscriptions for organising the puja. Since then, community pujas in Bengal came to be known as 'Baroyari – 'baro' meaning 12 and 'yar' meaning friends.In Kolkata, the first 'Baroyari' Durga Puja was organised in 1910 by the 'SanatanDharmotsahini Sabha' at Balaram Bosu Ghat Road, Bhawanipur. At the same time, similar Baroyari Pujas were held at Ramdhan Mitra Lane and Sikdar Bagan. The Indian freedom struggle also had an influence on Durga puja in Kolkata. In 1926, Atindranath Bose initiated the first 'Sarbojanin' Durga puja in which anybody, irrespective of caste, creed and religion, could participate in the festivities. This was consciously done to instill a feeling of unity.[27]

Environmental impact[edit]

Environmental hazards from the materials used to make and color the idols pollute local water sources, as the idols are brought directly into the river at the end of festivities. Efforts are underway to introduce eco-friendly materials to the artisans who make the idols. West Bengal has been credited by its own environmental agency as being possibly the first Indian State to successfully curb the use of hazardous paints. However, by their own account, only two-thirds of the idols made are currently coloured with eco-friendly paints.[28]

Commercialization of Hindu festivals like Durga Puja in the last quarter of 20th century have become a major environmental concern as devout Hindus want bigger and brighter idols. Environmentalists say the idols are often made from hazardous materials like cement, plastic, plaster of Paris, and toxic paints.[29]

Theme-based Pujas and pandals[edit]

Pandals and idols inspired by a particular theme have been the hallmark of many community or Sarbajanin Pujas in Kolkata since the 1990s. Puja committees decide on a particular theme, whose elements are incorporated into the pandal and the idols. Popular themes include ancient civilisations like the Egyptians or Incas. Contemporary subjects like the RMS Titanic andHarry Potter have also been the subject in some pandals.

The design and decoration is usually done by art and architecture students based in the city. The budget required for such theme-based pujas is often higher than traditional pujas. They attract crowds and are well received. Inspired by Kolkata, theme-based pandals are becoming popular in cities in neighbouring states, particularly Odisha (see above). Experimentation with the idols does not happen much outside Calcutta.

Rapid growth of competitiveness in theme pandals, and also rapid growth of massive billboards that come up at strategic junctions, prior to Puja and allied commercial activities, has also created a cultural backlash from city's traditional Puja pandals, which now claim, "We do not do theme puja, we do Durga puja,", according to one hoarding put up in Salt Lake, Kolkata.[30]

Popular culture specific to the puja[edit]

Durga Puja is one of the most important events in the Bengali society's calendar. Many Bengali films, albums and books are released to coincide with the Puja. The West Bengal government gives a fortnight of holidays for the Pujas. This time is used in various ways. Many people travel in India or abroad. Gatherings of friends called "Aadda" in Bengali is common in many homes and restaurants. A lot of shopping is done, and retailers cash in on this opportunity with special offers.

Visiting pandals with friends and family, talking and sampling the food sold near them is known as pandal hopping. Young people embrace this activity. Pujor Gaan (Songs of Puja) are the Adhunik Bengali songs that come out every year during this time.

Media Attention[edit]

TV and radio channels telecast Puja celebrations. Many Bengali channels devote whole days to the Pujas. Bengali and Oriya weekly magazines bring out special issues for the Puja known as "Pujabarshiki" or "Sharadiya Sankhya". These contain the works of many writers both established and upcoming and are thus much bigger than the regular issues. Some notable examples are Anandamela, Shuktara, Desh, Sarodiya Anandabazar Patrika, Sananda, Nabakallol, Bartaman[31] All major local news publications are closed on the last day of the festivities.

Movies[edit]

  • Famous director Satyajit Ray's film Joi Baba Felunath is centred around Durga Puja and his movie Nayak also has a Durga Puja reference.[32]
  • Rituporno Ghosh's Hirer Angti, Utsav and Antarmahal all are centred around Durga Puja.
  • The Hindi film "Devdas" interweaves the celebration of Durga Puja into its story line.
  • The film Kahaani is also centred around Durga Puja and plays a prominent role in the unfolding of the events of this thriller film.

West Bengal[edit]

The worship of Durga in the autumn (Shôrot) is the year's largest Hindu festival of Bengal. Durga Puja is also celebrated in Nepal and Bhutanaccording to local traditions and variations. Pujameans "worship," and Durga's Puja is celebrated from the sixth to tenth day of the waning moon in the month of Ashvin (Ashshin), which is the sixth month in the Bengali calendar. Occasionally however, due to shifts in the lunar cycle relative to the solar months, it may also be held in the following month, Kartika. In the Gregorian calendar, these dates correspond to the months of September and October.

In the Krittibas RamayanaRama invokes the goddess Durga in his battle against Ravana. Although she was traditionally worshipped in the spring, due to contingencies of battle, Rama had to invoke her in the autumn akaal bodhan.[33] Today it is this Rama's date for the puja that has gained ascendancy, although the spring puja, known as Basanti Puja [One of the oldest 'sabeki' Basanti Puja is held every year at spring in Barddhaman Pal Bari at Raniganga Bazar, M.K.Chatterjee Rd near Karjon Gate], is also present in the Hindu almanac. Another famous portrait of Basanti Puja, can be found in Tangra Rakhal Chandra Das' Bari, which is more than half and a century old. Since the season of the puja is autumn, it is also known as ('Sharodia').

The pujas are held over a ten-day period, which is traditionally viewed as the coming of the married daughter, Durga, to her father, Himalaya's home. It is the most important festival in Bengal, and Bengalis celebrate with new clothes and other gifts, which are worn on the evenings when the family goes out to see the 'pandals' (temporary structures set up to venerate the goddess). Although it is a Hindu festival, religion takes a back seat on these five days: Durga Puja in Bengal is a carnival, where people from all backgrounds, regardless of their religious beliefs, participate and enjoy themselves to the hilt.[34]

Kolkata (Calcutta)[edit]

In Kolkata alone more than two thousand pandals are set up, all clamouring for the admiration and praise of the populace.[35] The city is adorned with lights. People from all over the country visit the city at this time, and every night is one mad carnival where thousands of people go 'pandal-hopping' with their friends and family. Traffic comes to a standstill, and indeed, most people abandon their vehicles to travel by foot after a point. A special task force is deployed to control law and order. Durga Puja in Kolkata is often referred to as the Rio Carnival of the Eastern Hemisphere.[36]

Siliguri[edit]

Hundreds of puja pandals are set up every year in the Siliguri Mahakuma area. The city is adorned with many colourful pandal, glorious "Protima", colourful lighting and sounds. The puja in Saktigarh, DeshbandhuPara,Hakimpara, Rabindra Sangha, Rathkhola, Champashari, Central Colony (N.R.I), Silpanchal(Burdwan Road) and Saktigarh Utjal Sangha,sorojini sangha[shivmandir] are famous and the oldest durga puja in this area.

Silpanchal Durga Puja committee is recognised as one of the oldest puja is town which was established in 1955 and is famous for the "Protima" and many other social activities they undertake during Pujas.

The oldest puja in Siliguri is of Swastika Yubak Sangha. It's one of the most crowd gathering puja of the region. The Puja Committee completed its 50th year of celebrations in 2007. Sorjini sangha completed its 150th year recently.[when?]

Cooch Behar[edit]

One of the oldest Durga pujas of Bengal. It has been said that this puja is started in 1510, by the founder of Cooch dynasty Raja Biswa Singha on the same year of his accession to the throne with the help of his younger brother Sishya Singha.

The gigantic sized Durga idol, popularly known as Baradebi (The Great Goddess), made with clay comprises only Maa Durga's image with Mahishasura and Jaya-Bijaya, her consorts excluding her children's idols; is vermilion red in colour. As a part of tradition, human-sacrifice is done there in the night of Ashtami on a secluded puja attended only by the members of the royal family; which still has been observing. Obviously, now it took a ritualistic form only offering blood-drops from one of the royal family member every-year. Other than this, many buffaloes, goats, pigeons are sacrificed in front of the deity. Not only the royal family, all the people of Cooch-behar regarded her as the supreme deity, calling as "Baro-devi" (Supreme-mother).

Chanduli, Katwa[edit]

One of oldest Durga Puja is held at a village named Chanduli, 12 km from Katwa city, which is more than 350 years old. The Puja is held under the auspices of Mitra bari Debottor estate and here Goddess Durga has two hands visible in place of ten hands. Here, Devi Durga is glorious and famous in this locality. Guptipara

In 1790 First Barwary puja held in this village of West Bengal in the district of Hooghly.[37] Great Goswami family of Dhaka is now at Guptipara led by Satyendra Nath Goswami, Roypara.

Lataguri[edit]

Lataguri is a small village in Jalpaiguri district. It has an old tradition of Durga Puja with lots of joy and cultural values in the heart of the people. Prantik Sangha, Netaji Sangha, Friends Club, Pal Chowdhury Bari (Family Puja) are some of the oldest pujas to name a few. In the day of Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Nabami and Bijoya Dashami people here celebrate it in a grand way with lots of joy. Specially in Prantik Sangha (Post Office Para) they have an old tradition of celebrating "Raksha Raksha" (Prayers offered to Durga to save whole body and mind and to give happiness and prosperity) by exchanging warmth of happiness and respect among the people with touching elder person's feet and hugging each other. After that small sweet balls laddu are distributed among the people. "Raksha Raksha" is celebrated in the day of Bijoya Dashami after idols (murtis) of Goddess Durga with her family are immersed in the most convenient body of water. The members of Pal Chowdhury Bari march to the pond near about half a kilometre for immersion of the goddess by taking it on their shoulder. This tradition has been following for 61 years.

Berhampore[edit]

Hundreds of puja pandals are set up every year in the Berhampore, Cossimbazar, Khagra jagdamba mandir [Tapashwi Ashram (Bhattacharya Bari), kajal saha & ganesh bhakat], MULTIFRESH, Madhupur, Gorabazaar area. All pandal are decorated with lights and sounds. Swarnamoyee, Baganpara, Bishtupur, Madhupur Balark Sangha, Ranibagan, Kadai, Swargadham, Ajana Sangha, Cossimbazar Choto Rajbari are famous and the oldest durga puja from this area. Cossimbazars Puja is the oldest puja which is about 300 years old. All visitors are mostly from Berhampore city and coming through different part of Murshidabad.[38] district and adjacent districts. Specially the Astami and Nabami nights are filled with crowd from different part of the district. Visitors come out on the roads with their family and friends. They enjoy the festival through the night. Also the Bisorjon (immersion of idol) to Bhagarathi River is a beautiful scene. A huge number of visitors gather on the river side (Gorabajar Ghat, Khagra Ghat) to visit the last journey of Durga Pratima. Generally the pandals and idols of Madhupur area win the prizes and famous artists perform during these days. Lighting from Chandan Nagar is done in this area to a great extent to increase the beauty of the Puja nights.

Jalpaiguri[edit]

Being one of the oldest cities of Colonial BengalJalpaiguri also observed the Durga puja with a great pomp in several places from more than a century. The oldest puja of the town is the Puja of Baikunthapur Rajbari which has started in the sixteenth century by the Raja Shishya Singha, the founder of Raikot kingdom. Kadamtala Durga-bari, Ramkrishna Mission, Jogamaya Kalibari, Samaj Para Sarvajanin Durga puja, Natun para, Panda Para, Tarun Dal,Mohitnagar club, Kalyani Group of Industries' pujas are some of the prominent and significant pujas of the town. Kumari puja in the morning of Ashtami at Ramkrishna Mission Ashram is one of the compulsory place to visit for the inhabitants of the town. More than hundred and seventy Durga pujas are celebrated through all over the town and adjacent suburbs. Some families such as Bagchis, Bhuiyans, Neogys, Guhas are the eminent families who observed Durga Puja in their respective houses from the colonial period. Biswas family of Deshbandhu Para also perform the Puja at their house. They gather every items and ingredients, prescribed in the Kalika Purana for performing the Durga puja. The auspicious chanting of Vedic mantras hymned through the house for all the four days, performed by Shreyan, a member of the family. All the members of the household lend a helping hand in accomplishing the puja successfully.This year the Biswas family also performed Durga Puja,led by Shreyan an accomplished Fashion Designer with full vigor.

Assam[edit]

In Silchar more than 300 exhibits, known as pandals, decorated with lights, sculptures and other art forms are created. After Bihu, Durga Puja is the most popular festival of Assam. According to historian Late Benudhar Sarma, the present form of worship of Durga with earthen idol in Assam was started during the reign of Ahom King Susenghphaa or Pratap Singha. The King heard about the festivity, the pomp and grandeur with which the King Naranarayan of Koch Bihar celebrated Durga Puja from one Sondar Gohain, who was under captivity of the Koch raja. King Pratap Singha sent artisans to Koch Bihar to learn the art of idol making. The King organised the first such Durga Puja celebration in Bhatiapara near Sibsagar. This was the first time Durga Puja with earthen idols in Assam was held for the masses, in addition to the worship in Durga temples like Kamakhya, Digheswari Temple, Maha Bhairabi Temple, Ugrotara, Tamreswari Mandir, etc. Subsequently, similar Pujas were celebrated by other Kings and nobles. Nowadays the Durga Puja is mostly a community festival celebrated in all the cities, towns, villages of Assam with great festivity and religious fervour for five days.

Durga Puja is the main festival of Hindus in the Bengali dominated Barak Valley of Assam, where Silchar is the main city. It is said that Durga Puja started in the valley during the rule of Dimasa king Suradarpa Narayan.

Bihar[edit]

Durga Puja is one of the major festivals in Bihar.Bhagvati Durga Puja and Nou-Durga along with Vijaya Dashami is an important festival of the Maithili Community. Hundreds of pandals are set up with carnivals. The city witnesses a huge surge in visitors in the four days from Maha Saptami upto Vijaya Dashami. More than 1000 exhibits, known as Pandals are setup across the city. Ancient Places of Patna Durga Puja includes Bari and Chhoti Patan Devi, Maa Shitla Mandir Agamkuan etc. Some of the popular puja pandals include New Dak Bunglow Road, Shiv Mandir Khajpura, Shri Krishna Puri, Durga Ashram etc.

Gujarat[edit]

Navaratri is devoted to Amba mataji. In some homes, images of mataji are worshiped in accordance with accepted practice. This is also true of the temples, which usually have a constant stream of visitors from morning to night. The most common form of public celebration is the performance of garba and dandia-ras/ras-garba (a form of garba with sticks), Gujarat's popular folk-dance, late throughout the nights of these nine days in public squares, open grounds and streets.[39]

Jharkhand[edit]

Durga Puja is celebrated with many carnivals. The festival mood starts from Mahalaya, a huge surge in visitors is witnessed during the last four days of the festival, arriving from cities like Jamshedpur (TATA), RanchiBokaroDhanbadSisai, etc. There are so many pandals as like as at Kolkata and Cuttack which makes interesting and enjoyful in these days at there. Karnataka[edit]

Durga Puja is celebrated in a grand way in this state. In Mysore, Dussehra is easily the most popular festival. Elephants are decked up with robes and jewellery and taken in processions through the streets of the city. In fact, many people visit Mysore from all over the country to watch this colourful event. There is also a floating festival in the temple tank at the foot of Chamundi Hill and a procession of chariots around the temple at the top.

Mysore is named after Mahishasur, the very demon which was slain by the Goddess. The original Indian name was Mahishur. There is a gigantic statue of the demon on top of theChamundi hills which is said to be the place where the demon was slain by the Great Goddess.

In recent years due to IT jobs Bengali population has drastically increased in Bangalore. Approximately 4 lakh Bengali people lives in Bangalore and over 33 [40]places Durga Puja has been organized.[41] The Sarjapur Outer ring road Bengali association[42] organises puja with grand celebration.Many famous Bangla bands visits every year.The most popular remains the Ulsoor Puja Pandal by Bengali Association,Bangalore.It attracts variety of food stalls & shopping items stalls at the puja fair.

Kashmir[edit]

Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir celebrate their festivals with pomp and show. These days, festivities are more subdued. The favourite deities of Kashmir are Lord Shiva and Serawali Ma Durga, the one who rides the tiger. Pundits\Dogris and Muslims alike vouch that Navratri is important. Here each Hindu household does the puja at home. All the adult members of the household fast on water. In the evenings, fruit may be taken. As elsewhere, Dogris grow barley in earthen pots. They believe that if the growth in this pot is good, there is prosperity all year. The most important ritual for Kashmiri Pandits is to visit the temple of guardian goddess Kheer Bhawani on all nine days. On the last day of Navratri, an aarti is held at the temple, after which people break their fast. On Dussehra day, Ravana's effigy is burnt.

Kerala[edit]

In Kerala, Durga Puja signifies the beginning of formal education for every child aged 3–5 years. While puja goes on in the temple for all ten days, it is the concluding three days which are most important. Ashtami is the day of Ayudya Puja, when all the tools at home are worshipped. Custom dictates that no tools be used on this day. On navami day, Goddess Saraswati is honoured by worshipping the books and records at home.[43]

Thousands throng the Saraswati temple at Kottayam during this period to take a dip in the mysterious holy pond, whose source is yet unknown. Large gatherings are also seen at the famous temples at Thekkegram (Palghat), in which there are no idols, only huge mirrors. A devotee finds himself bowing before his own reflection, which symbolises that God is within us.

Thrikkavu Temple, a famous Durga Devi Temple at PonnaniMalapuram District of Kerala, is also famous for Navaratri festival and vidyarambham (beginning of formal education). Thousands of children throng this temple on vijaya desami day for vidyarambham. Santhanantha Matom at Mangadu in Kollam observes Navaratri festival with all the religious purity and rituals. On the tenth day, The Vijaya desami, Children perform Vidyarambham here not only for education, but also for various arts and music.

Madhya Pradesh[edit]

Madhya Pradesh is a unique state of India where most Hindu festivals are celebrated with vigour and enthusiasm. Durga Puja is celebrated in almost all towns and cities across the state. Festivities begin with the installation of idols of Durga on the first day of Winter Navaratri and culminate on the Vijayadashmi Day also celebrated as Dassehra – Burning of effigies of Ravana. During these 10 days festivals cities and towns are decorated with pandals and cultural events are organised in every nook and corner. In fact in Madhya Pradesh one can see the mix of all cultures of India which justifies its name Madhya (Central) Pradesh (Province). Durga devotees fast for nine days and worship Lord Ram.

Maharashtra and Goa[edit]

In Maharashtra, Durga Puja is an enjoyable occasion. Puja is performed each day and devotees do not remove the flower garland that is put each day on the idol or image of the deity. After nine days, all nine garlands are removed together. Young girls who have not attained maturity are invited to eat, play games, dance and sing. An elephant is drawn with Rangoli, and the girls play guessing games.It is called as 'bhondala' Then they are fed a meal of their choice.In Maharastra there is also played 'Jogava' & 'Gondhal' for Goddess. The pujas in Mumbai are performed in special mandals (groups) in areas like Dadar, Parel, Gwalior tank, Powai, Belapur, Chembur, Bandra, Andheri, etc.

Pune being a Cultural city of Maharashtra, is one of Major Place for Celebration of Durga Puja. All the Probashi's gather togather in their respective Durga Pandal for the festival. Biswa Bharati, Bhosari is one of newly added Durga Puja in Pune, which enhance the lightening of Maa Durga. The tradition & cultural truly makes you feel that you are not in Kolkata.

Nashik boasts of four major ones celebrated by "prabashi" Bengalis' – like the ones at the Government of India Press grounds, the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (H.A.L)in Ojhar, then the one at Artillery Station,Deolali and one in the industrial area of Satpur-Ambad.

Yavatmal is also one of the places in Maharastra where Durga Puja is celebrated in full swing with at-most belief. People do fast these nine days, some do 'Nirankal Upawasam', a few does it one time having buttermilk and fruits at other times. There are a lots of Mandals which are celebrating Durga Pooja festivals since decades. Every year variety of monuments are chosen as the Mandir Sets. These nine day passes by just like the whole city is celebrating the Festival as A Family.

In Goa great festivities take place in all the temples,especially Devi temples like in Shanta Durga Temple and other temples of ShreeMhalasa Narayani, Shree Vijayadurga. People fast and observe festivities at home. Except temples there are Bengali Associations in Goa who celebrate Durga Puja in the traditional Bengali way. There are approximately 15 Durga Pujas conducted every year in whole Goa. The Durga Puja of Vasco's Goa Banga Committee is 46 years old as in 2012. Artisans and priests come from West Bengal.

New Delhi[edit]

In 1910, a year before Delhi was declared the capital of British India, the first Sarbojanin(community) puja in Delhi was organised near Kashmiri Gate by a group of expatriate Bengalis, including the doctor Hemchandra Sen. This group became the Delhi Durga Puja Samiti, popularly known as the Kashmere Gate Puja.[44] The Timarpur puja (near Delhi University) started in 1914.[45] The pujas at Minto Road and Mata Sundari Road started shortly thereafter. By the 1970s, 40 pujas were being held in Delhi[46]

Today, over 800 pujas are held in Delhi, with a few hundred more in Gurgaon and Noidaeach.[47] By the 1970s, 40 pujas were being celebrated in Delhi, with many theatre troupes performing. Bengali movies would be screened late into the night at many pandals.[46] Today movies have given way to cultural functions, with many of the top kolkata music artistes and other cultural shows being hosted at various delhi pandals. Chittaranjan Park has the highest density of pujas, with nine large sArbojanIn pujas and several family celebrations, and the pandals reflect many Kolkata trends.[48]

Pujas at the New Delhi KalibariChittaranjan Park Kali Mandir, Greater Kailash Kali Mandir and Lajpat Nagar Puja Samity are held in a very traditional manner, following all rituals. Many of the older pujas of Delhi also maintain a traditional style; the one in Kashmiri gate going to bisarjan in a bullock cart as in the days of yore.[49] As is the wont with Durga Pujas, factionalism has also led to opposition, and in 2011, a puja group had to shift venue after being opposed by nearby residents.[50]

Odisha[edit]

Various accounts exist which ascribe the origin of Durga Puja in the state of Odisha. All historical accounts agree on the influence from other regions although some mythological accounts describe an independent origin.

Durga Puja is a festival, which is observed for 10 days. Odisha, the land of Lord Jagannath, the land of powerful Hindu Kingdom, the land of Raja & Maharaja's, the royals of Odisha patronage annual Sharodiyo Utsav before the state abolition with Republic of India. The Durga Puja is celebrated in two different ways in Odisha. In Shakti peethas (temples of goddess) the Durga Puja is observed with proper rituals for 10 to 16 days known as Shodasa Upachara/Shohala dinatmaka,which starts from 7 days earlier to mahalaya called asMulastami and ends on Vijayadashamidussehra. Goddess Durga is also worshipped by devotees in different pandals across the state. The pandals are decorated with beautiful decorative.

According to Markandeya Purana the King of Chedi dynasty Suratha started rituals of Durga Puja during 300B.C. The Chedi dynasty belongs to Kalinga (modern Odisha). Durga Puja has different names in different Puranas and Sastras. In Devi Purana & Kalika Purana it is named as Vijaya Dashami. It is named as Mahaparbana in Devi Mahatmya and Duseehera in Markandeya Purana.

The present form of worship of Durga with earthen idol in Odisha was started during the reign of Ganga King Chodaganga Dev in the 11th century at Puri. The earthen idol of Mahishamardini Durga is known as Gosani and the Dussehra fesival is known as Gosani Yatra. It is noteworthy that the co-worship of Mahisamardini Durga with Madhava (Lord Jagannath) is prevalent from 11th century, Eastern Ganga dynasty period, in Puri.

Before the concept of Sarvajanin Durga Puja started, it was being conducted by princely houses and the first such Puja being conducted anywhere in the world at the same venue and continuing till date is in Odisha. It is at Rameswarpur in Bhadrak district of the state, where it was started about four centuries ago by the Mahashay family who migrated in from Kotarang near Howrah as a part of Todarmal's famous survey of India during Emperor Akbar's rule.

It is said that in the year 1512 to 1517 Chaitanya Deva had come to Cuttack, the capital of Gajapati empire of Odisha and the then emperor of Odisha, Gajapati Pratap Rudra Dev, received him at Gadagadia Ghata situated near the river bank of Mahanadi very close to the kings Palace popularly known as Barabati fort. That year, Sri Chatanya Deva started Durga puja at Binod Bihari temple presently known as Balu Bazar. Further, it is also believed thatNetaji Subhas Chandra Bose, whose birth placed is Cuttack had organised Durga puja with great pomp and show to organise youngsters in British India exactly like Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak had done it at Maharashtra (the Ganesh Utsav).

The first recorded Sarvajanin Durga Puja in the state is said to have been in the year 1832 in the Kazibajaar area of Cuttack

A pandal in Odisha is called "Medho". For many years, the most expensive installation was the ChaandiMerrha (Chaandi means Silver) of Choudhuri Bajaar area of Cuttack. The ornamentation was done entirely in silver. A substantial increase in funding has led to the gold plating of the ornamentation. Now it is known as "Suna Medho" (Suna means Gold). A few other Pujas in Cuttack now have silver ornaments, too.

The Durga Puja festivities are also prominent in Maa Katak Chandi Temple. Maa Cuttack Chandi is the presiding deity of Cuttack. The goddess popularly called as Maa Katak Chandi, sits and rules on the heart of the ancient city. She is worshipped as Bhuvaneswari. Maa Chandi is worshipped in various incarnations of Durga during the puja. In Cuttack, people strongly believe Maa Katak Chandi as 'The Living Goddess'.

The largest Pujas are held in BhubaneswarCuttackBalasoreSambalpurKendrapara and Rourkela. Shaheed Nagar, Nayapalli, Rasulgarh and Marshaghai of Kendrapara spend the most on the idols, decorations, lighting, and other elements.

One reason for the wide acceptance of Durga Puja is the importance of Maa Tarini, who is considered one of the embodiments of Shaktiin Oriya culture. In addition, the state is close to Bengal and the peoples share a common socio-cultural history spanning millennia. Odisha is home to many important shrines dedicated to the Goddess; great festivities are organised there on Durga and Kali Puja.

It is thus one of the prime festivals of Odisha as well. People in Odisha celebrate it on a large scale. The Goddess Durga is among the sacred goddesses of Odisha. The celebrations are quite similar to the neighbouring state of West Bengal.

Punjab[edit]

People of Punjab strictly observe Navaratri. Some Punjabis have only milk for seven days before breaking the fast on ashtami or navami. They worship Durga Ma and do the aarti at home. Some of them have fruit or a complete meal only once a day. Intoxicating drinks or meat, and other forms of entertainment are completely avoided. At the end of the fast, devotees feed beggars or worship little girls who spell the Shakti of the Mother Goddess.

Tripura[edit]

Durga Puja is Celebrated in the state of Tripura with all its pride and glory. In India Durga Puja is the second biggest celebrated in this state and also the biggest celebrated festival to the people of Tripura. Particularly, in the Capital city of Agartala. Population living in Here are ethnically 70% Bengali and religiously 86% Hindu, Therefore making it suitable for the Puja to be the single most important festival in the state. Mainly the pujas are held in various 'paras' which have their own local clubs organising the yearly pujas. The best puja is in Agartala- Like Central Road Yuva Sangstha, Shanti kami, Shantipara, Usha Bazar, Badharghat, Pole Star, Milan Sangha, Haradhan Sangha, Lalbahadur Club, Modern Club, Ramthakur Sangha, Netaji Play Centre etc. usually the clubs organise various cultural Shows to attract highest number of visitors to their pandals and also indulge in a friendly competition amongst themselves. the main centre for 'Visharjan' is the Dashamighat area of the city. Since the Hindu-Bengali ethnicity is maximum here, Durga puja is the most widely celebrated in this state of Northeastern Part of India. A long decades passed since the Bengalis had migrated to this state and established a much better developing area along with the different tribes of the people of the state, from that very beginning point of time Durga puja enhanced and had flown experiencing in a better view.

Other cities where the puja takes place include Amarpur,Udaipur, Belonia, Kumarghat, Santir bazar, Sabrum, Dharmanagar.

Andhra Pradesh[edit]

Durga Puja is celebrated in the state of Andhra Pradesh at Vijayawada, Proddatur, Nandyal, Warangal and Hyderabad with all its pride and glory. The Durga temple in Vijayawada is located adjacent to Krishna River and near to Prakasham Barrage is the largest and famous temple in Andhra Pradesh. In Rayalaseema region, The Dasara Celebrations In Proddatur stands 2nd place after mysore in South India. In Nandyala and Kurnool, Dasara is one of the biggest festival along with Ugadi. People buy new clothes and things for home. The Durga temple in Warangal is located adjacent to Badrakali Lake located in Center. The distance from Vijayawada to Hyderabad is 280 km and also from Vijayawada to Tirupati (Loard Venkateswara or Balaji) temple is about 320 km. This temple is one of the biggest devotees place in South India. In Hyderabad, Durga Puja is being celebrated for more than 60 years now. There are 5 major organisation that celebrate the Durga puja across the city.

Tamil Nadu[edit]

In Tamil Nadu, Golu is the festival celebrated during the Navaratri period. On this occasion dolls, predominantly that of the Gods and Goddesses from Hindu Tradition are artistically arranged on a seven stepped wooden platform. Traditionally, 'marapachi' wooden dolls representing Perumal and Thayaar are also displayed together at a dominant location on the top step of the platform erected specially for the occasion. On the 9th day (Navami day), Saraswati puja is performed when special prayers are offered to goddess Saraswati – the divine source of wisdom and enlightenment. Books and musical instruments are placed in the puja pedestal and worshipped. Also, tools are placed for the Ayudh puja. Even vehicles are washed and decorated, and puja performed for them on this occasion. As part of the Golu festival, Saraswati puja is performed as Ayudh puja. This is followed by the Vijayadashami celebrations at the culmination of the ten-day festivities. Apart from the golu pooja, Ayudah Puja has become very popular when business houses celebrate it ardently

Bangladesh[edit]

Bangladesh has the second largest Hindu population in the world. Being the largest religious festival for Bengali Hindus, Durga Puja celebrations span across the country with over thousands of Puja Mandaps set up in villages, towns and cities. A three-day holiday is observed by all educational institutions, while Bijay Dashami is a national holiday.[51]

Durga Puja is celebrated by the Indian diaspora residing in different parts of the world. It is also celebrated in regions and by people culturally and historically distinct from India.

United Kingdom[edit]

Bengalis from state of West Bengal (India) migrated to the UK from early 60s and contributed as doctors,engineers and skilled work force. They brought with them Ma Durga, and Durga Puja is celebrated all over UK with much gusto and enthusiasm. From north of UK, to South there are scores of Durga Puja, and these 4/5 days makes one feel part of West Bengal. The celebration includes not only the Bengalis but many other Hindus as well. During the same period, the Gujarati community also celebrates 9 nights of Puja (Goddesses Ame, similar to Goddesses Durga) and famous Gurba community dance, culminating in to Dashera festival.

Amongst the noteworthy Pujas in London, London Sharad Utsav Puja hosted at Ealing Town Hall has attracted London's Bengalis due jovial atmosphere, well organised cultural programs by renowned artists, and excellent food arrangements.

China[edit]

In 2004, a group of Indians residing in China came together and organised Durga puja in Shanghai. Since then it has become an yearly affair and has got bigger with active participation from the Indian, expat and the Chinese community. The idol of Ma Durga has been brought in from Kumartuli. Every year purohit from India is flown in to perform the puja. Elaborate decoration are done at the venue to give a very distinct look of a pandal interior. Men, women and children turn up in traditional Indian dress at the event. Dhaks are played and Dhunuchi dances are performed. Bhog is served to all guests.

The evenings are occupied with community cultural program and performance from visiting overseas artist.

The event receives a fair bit of support from personal and corporate sponsors.

Middle East[edit]

In Muscat, Bongiyo Parishad (Bengali Association of Muscat) celebrates Durga Puja with Bhog distribution (Astomi & Navami) and Anjali in Shiva Temple. Vijaya sammilani (cultural programs on the event of Vijaya Dashami/ Dussehra) is also a part of this celebration. Hundreds of Bengalis and others are found to enjoy these days here. Traditional "Dhak" is not played here; but these days, recorded beats of "Dhak" add a separate dimension to the beats of the devotees' hearts.

Nepal[edit]

Dussehra in Nepal is called Dashain.[52] As it is chiefly a Hindu nation, the pattern and dates of the festivals coincide with those of India. The King of Nepal plays a key role in the festivities, particularly during Saptami or the Seventh day of the pujas. Despite the overthrow of monarchy in Nepal, the Royal Family still has a significant cultural role in the nation.

United States, Europe and Australia[edit]

Durga Puja is organised by communities of Indians in the United States, Europe, and Australia. Although pandals are not constructed, the idols are flown in from Kumartuli in Bengal. The desire by the diaspora peoples to keep in touch with their cultural ties has led to a boom in religious tourism, as well as learning from priests or purohits versed in the rites. From 2006[53] the immersion of the Durga idol has been allowed in the Thames river for the festival which is held in London.

One of the biggest Durga Pujas in Europe takes place at the Ealing Town Hall, West London. Organised by London Sharad Utsav, this Puja has gained in popularity over the last few years, to be one of the biggest held outside the subcontinent. In 2011 they organised what they called the Global Durga Puja, whereby they showed (deferred) live, the Durga Pujas of Kolkata directly at their Venue, much to the amazement and excitement of the Visitors to their Puja. They also organise the Kumari Puja, which is the ritual of worshipping a small girl as Devi Durga. Another traditional Durga Puja in held in Cardiff by Wales Puja committee. They have been doing Puja for 39 years and have twice commissioned Image making in Cardiff ( 2002 & 2009) by the craftsmen from Burdhwan & Midnapore, West Bengal making complete Durga Protima crafted in UK.

In the United States the pujas are often hosted during weekends with few exceptions. The puja weekends are time for Bengal friends and family to gather together to spend the weekend savouring Bengali culture. Cultural programs are held; there is food; stalls selling ethnic clothes, jewellery, books, music DVD's etc. There is a general atmosphere of festivity.

In Australia, the major Durga Puja festival were held in Sydney and Melbourne. They are also held very grandly in Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Bhog Distribution, Cultural Programmes, anjali and dhunuchi naach were the main events. BANSW and BPCSV were the main organizers in Sydney and Melbourne respectively.

In Germany several Durga Pujas are celebrated along with Bhog distribution and Anjali in Bremen, Berlin (over 40 years old), Frankfurt(Main), Hamburg, Köln (Cologne), Stuttgart and Munich (München).

Indonesia[edit]

Although Durga Puja is not a major festival among the Hindus in Bali dan Tengger, the Sindhi and South Indian community have constructed many Maa Durga temples in Jakarta and Tangerang, where Durga Puja is a major celebration here. Sindhis end their Durga Puja on the Ashtmi Day, marked by Havan and Nyari Seva (feeding food to young girls) while South Indians continue till the 10th day. On these days garba and dandia events are also held which ends with a grand celebration of Dassera, where images of Ravan are burned in the Shiva Mandhir, the largest Mandhir in Jakarta.

South East Asia[edit]

In Malaysia and Singapore, the Malaysian Bengalee Association and the Bengali Association of Singapore celebrate Durga Puja with Bhog distribution and Anjali along with cultural programs every year.[54]
